Talent Shortage

There already is a shortage of medical professionals and support staff to provide quality healthcare services. Demand is continuing to rise, which is creating an even larger gap in the available number of qualified healthcare professionals and staff.

Officials with health insurer Prudential say 90 percent of hospital executives expect increasing shortages of doctors, specialists, and nurses. They also expect an increasing shortage of healthcare clinicians and technicians. Samuel Siebu says it all adds up to a greater demand for fewer qualified and experienced healthcare service providers.

Training Difficulties

The rising demand for healthcare services is outpacing the ability to educate and train new healthcare professionals and support staff. The cost of education is a severe barrier for many potential healthcare professionals.

Hospitals and other healthcare service providers are short-staffed and having trouble training new staff. The cost of education and training complicates the problem.

Exhaustion Among Current Staff

Short-staffed hospitals and other medical services facilities are putting greater demand on their current doctors, nurses, and staff. Those increased demands mean longer hours, fewer days off, and increased exhaustion.

Samuel Siebu says an overworked and exhausted medical services provider is prone to making mistakes. Ultimately, the best solution is to hire more qualified staff, but the shortage of available candidates for employment makes that a very difficult task and a virtually unobtainable goal at this point in time.

Difficulty Retaining Employees

A shortage of medical professionals adds up to a lot of demand for experienced and skilled medical professionals. Many medical professionals will start at one hospital or other healthcare service provider and leave for others when more lucrative and career-oriented opportunities arise.

Adopting New Healthcare Technology

Samuel Siebu says newer healthcare technology can help to alleviate the shortage of available doctors, nurses, and staff. New healthcare technology that uses artificial intelligence (AI) is especially promising at helping to provide patients with faster diagnoses and treatment plans.

Unfortunately, new technology requires costly investment and time spent training staff how to use it. AI-based technologies might help to fulfill services that currently are understaffed and offset operating costs that otherwise would be required to provide the same service in person.
